Abstract submitted to IOA Acoustics Conference

 

An abstract of an article has been recently submitted to the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) Acoustics 2023 conference. The abstract has been written by LSBU acoustics student of class 2021-22 IOA Diploma Daniel Hagan and his final project supervisor Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina. The article is entitled “ Investigating the suitability of guidance on large surfaces outdoor reflection correction factors” and is based on Daniel’s IOA Diploma final project. The conference https://www.ioa.org.uk/civicrm/event/info?id=750will take place on 16 and 17 October 2023 in Winchester, UK. Acoustics students visit the School of the Association of Architects

 

On the evening of the 23rd February 2023 the Masters in Environmental and Architectural Acoustics studied collaborated in a workshop with the School of the  Association of Architects. The architects presesented two project students which the acousticians discussed and explored the implications of the design!  

LSBU Student Colin Alden wins Acoustical Society of America Newman medal

Colin Alden,  student of the 2021-22 MSc in Environmental and Architectural Acoustics at LSBU has recently won the prestigious Acoustical Society of America R. B. Newman medal. The program honors outstanding students at schools of architecture and architectural engineering throughout the world. Colin’s final project dissertation was supervised by Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina and was entitled “A study on sound propagation from rifle muzzle devices”. The research work investigated for the first time the sound propagation and directivity characteristics from modern rifle muzzles. Colin and Luis are preparing a journal article based on the research with plans to be published in mid 2023

 

Students Visit to the Royal Opera House

 

On the 23rd February 2023 the acousticians studying at LSBU visited the Royal Opera House to see behind the scenes. Steven Foulston and Alexandra Lucas hosted the IOA Diploma and MSc in Environemntal and Architectural Acoustics. The students enjoyed the field trip, the acoustics of the various audiotroria, and the beautiful views offered from the terrace!

Acoustic aspects of Net Zero for Building Design- the First Cohort

 

The first LSBU cohort for a new Short Course, "Net Zero for Building Dsign" visited the Acoustics Laboratory on 23rd February 2023. The students had exposure to the theories which sit behind acoustics and the practical aspects all in one afternoon. A lot to take in, but the group bonded over the value acoustics has to society.

Visit by Association of Architects students

 
For the 5th year students from the School of the Association of Architects visited the Acoustics Laboratory. This is part of an on-going collaboration between students of acoustics and students of architect. Twelve students interacted and engaged in acoustic experiments and next week the Association hosts the Acousticians. Many thanks to Dr Doug Shearer and Ms Laura de Azarate for organsing the events.

Inargural Lecture - Acoustics for the Benefit of Musicians+

 

On the 25th January 2023 Professor Stephen Dance gave his second Inargural Lecture. Steve holds a chair in acoustics at London South Bank Unniversity and graced us with a presentation on, "Acoustics for the Benefit to Musicians+". A packed audience enjoyed the presentaton and the demonstrations to illustrate the link between noise and hearing. A Youtube video on LSBU channel will be available shortly.
