AES Presentation by Nick Durup

On the 25th May 2011 Nick Durup gave a presentation to the AES Cambridge branch. Nick's presentation was based on his Master's dissertation, "RAF Music Rehearsal Facility" and it was well receive by the 30 attendees.

Georgia receives the IOA Young Persons' Award for Innovation

On the 21st May 2011, Georgia Zepidou received her IoA Young Persons' Award for Innovation in Acoustics. Georgia was flown to the Institute of Acoustics Auditorium Acoustics Conference in Dublin and at the banquet received a silver plate from Geoff Crowhurst, Director of Industrial Acoustics Company, sponser of the award.

Nicky presents at Seattle

On the 27th May 2011, at the 161st ASA meeting in Seattle Nicola Shiers presented her PhD research. Nicky's paper was on hospital acoustics and was in the last session of a long week, but was very well received!

John helps Leo Beranek

On the 26th May 2011, John Zeman acted as an AV student helper at the 161st ASA meeting. As it happens John's job involved helping 96 year old Leo Beranek give a paper on his latest research efforts!

Steve judges Wenger Poster Competition

On the 26th May 2011, Steve was a judge of the Wenger Architecture Acoustic Poster competition as part of the Newman celebrations. There were 32 posters and 6 prizes, so judging was tough - well done to the students of RPI and Chalmers Uniersity who claimed the victory!

John presents at Seattle

On the 25th May 2011 John Zeman, a Masters students, presented his dissertation to the 161st ASA Meeting in Seattle. His project was on, "A comparative analysis of bespoke absorptive panels". Well done John!

Steve presents in Seattle

On the 24th May 2011 Steve presented a paper at a Special Session in celebration of 25 years of the Newman medal in front of Mary Newman. Steve gave an international perspective on the work of the Newman Fund and how it has been used to promote the PhD programme at LSBU.

The Acoustics Group in Seattle

On the 23-27 May 2011 the Acoustics Group attended the 161st Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America. Bridget was organising a Joint 2015 meeting, Steve/Nicky and John were presenting in the friendliest city in the States - Seattle!

ETRV Theromastic Valve Tested

On 19th May 2011 Chalmor tested their new quiet ETRV electornic theromastic radiator valve. KTP Associate Shyel Stark measured a range of products from competitors. The ETRV product was so quiet that even pressing a button ruined the experiment!

New NTI XL2 Sound Meter

The Acoustics Group now have the latest NTI XL2 sound analyser. This meter comes with real time analysis, reverberation, speech intelligiblity, and more importantly is student friendly - robust and it's cheap to replace the microphone!

Meet the Artist at Herman Miller

On 17th May 2011 Herman Millar hosted it's twice yearly 'Meet the Artist' seminar. On this occasion Anne Kyyro Quinn presented her last designs at the National Design Centre, Aldwych. Anne was joined by John Zeman, an Intern of the Acoustics Group to present the latest research findings. Good company and good wine was had by all!

Steve promoted to Reader in Acoustics

On the 1st May 2011 Dr Stephen Dance was promoted to Reader in Acoustics. To celebrate this he immediately went on holiday to recover from the shock!

1st Exit Tests of Academy Students

On the 6th May 2011, the first set of Royal Academy of Music student exit audiometric tests were completed. We selected just the Percussionist, Brass and Woodwind players to be retested. These musicians came to see us in September 2007 and are about to undergo their final exams and seemed quite relaxed about it!

Old(ish) Students Return!

On the 5th May 2011 three students from last year visited the Acoustics Group and we had a working lunch. Paul Herwin was in to give his perspective on studio design to the Architectural Acoustics students. John Zeman had just flown in from the USA to meet up and discuss future collaboration. Nick Durup was with us to pursue his PhD research. Great to see you guys!

Student Design Competition

On Thursday 26th May 2011, Dr Stephen Dance will be one of the judges of the Student Design Competition at the 161st Acoustical Society of America conference in Seattle. The competition is sponsered by the Newman Fund, the National Council of Acoustic Consultants, and the Wenger Foundation. Good luck to all the teams involved!
