CIBSE&EI Accreditation Visit – LSBU

Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineering (CIBSE) & Energy Institute (EI) visited London South Bank University for reaccreditation of the undergraduate and postgraduate Building Services Engineering courses including MSc Environmental and Architectural Acoustic course for the next 5 years. Dr Aygun showed panel members our extensive acoustic facilities including reverberation chamber and anechoic chamber. Our technician, Mr Richard White, gave them a demonstration of reverberation using balloons in both our chambers.

Staying in Quietest Room in The World Until I Went Crazy

Callux visited the Acoustics Group in March 2019 to attempt to break the record for staying in the anechoic chamber at London South Bank University. You can watch how acoustics affects your hearing after about 45 minutes of this video entitled Staying in Quietest Room in The World Until I went Crazy

Abstract Submitted to the International Congress in Acoustics

ICA is please to inform Dr Aygun that his abstract “Determining the damping ratio of the bone using a vibroa-coustic method” has been accepted for ICA 2019. The conference is taking place from 09-13 September in Aachen, Germany. A full reviewed paper will be submitted to be included in the Proceedings soon.

A research paper published in Journal of Applied Acoustics

The Journal of Applied Acoustics was pleased to inform Dr Aygun that his article, “A viscoelastic system for determining acoustical and mechanical parameters of the bone” has been published online.   Applied Acoustics Volume 150, July 2019, pages 70-75.URL:  https://doi.org/10.1016/j.apacoust.2019.01.034

InterNoise 2019 Madrid

A paper entitled “Investigation of acoustical and structural parameters of recycled glass bead composite panels” was accepted by Inter-Noise 2019 which will be held in Madrid between 16th and 19th June 2019.  The paper is included in the Inter-Noise Proceeding. The aim of the paper is to determine the acoustical and structural properties of recycled glass bead composite panels in order to assess their suitability for civil engineering applications, especially in noisy urban environments, both as a construction material and as dedicated noise barriers.  The paper was written by Dr Haydar Aygun and Dr Finian McCann. Dr Aygun will present the paper at Inter-Noise 2019. I hope you enjoy reading the paper.  The conference attendance is sponsored by UK Acoustics Network.

IoA Acoustics 2019

A research paper has been submitted to IoA Acoustics 2019 conference which will be held on 13th and 14th May 2019 at the Milton Keynes.  The title of the paper is “Determining mechanical parameters of the bone using vibro-acoustic methods”.  It’s written by Dr Haydar Aygun. The paper will be included in the Proceedings and it will be presented on Monday 13th May 2019 by Dr Aygun at the conference. Dr Aygun hopes to see you at IoA conference and enjoy the paper.

Invitation to Health Conservatoires Seminar

Prof Stephen Dance and former PhD student Dr Ben Dymock have been invited to give a seminar to the Spring meeting of Healthy Conservatories network, part of Musical Impact. The work undertaken with the Royal Academy of Music will be summarised for the presentation to be held at Leeds College of Music on 23rd May 2019. We have a lot to discuss!

External Examiner for Richard Seaton

Prof Stephen Dance has been asked to act as external examiner for the doctoral thesis of Richard Seaton. Mr Seaton was a lecturer at the Open University. His PhD is entitled, "Pitch drift in A Cappella Choral Singing". His thesis will be examined in late May 2019. Let's hope it's a good read!

Collaboration with St Paul's Choristers

Over Easter Prof Stephen Dance is working with the Choristers of St Paul's Cathedral. Measurements and dosimetry of the sound level during a selection of performances and rehearsal will be undertaken. This started on the 3rd April 2019 with a performance of the Passion of our Lord according to St John by Bach. This involved the full Choir, St Paul's Choristers, St Paul's Singers, St Paul's Baroque Orchestra. A beautiful performance, the first of four to be monitored.
