Music and Speech Listening Levels on the Tube

On the 28th February 2013 Applied Acoustics published a paper based on MSc student Phil Wash's thesis, MP3 listening levels on London Underground for music and speech.Phil now works for Applied Acoustics Design.

Musical Acoustics Group Meeting


On the 2nd July 2013 the Institute of Acoustics Musical Acoustics Group will host a one day meeting at Friends House opposite St Panacea's station. Dr Dance will be presenting a paper on our work with conservatoires and MSc student Shane Sugrue will present his thesis on choral singing and space. Looking forward to the summer event.

Departmental Best Student Award 2011/12

On the 20th February 2013, Sheldon Walters won the Building Services, Sustainability and Acoustics Best Masters Student awarded for 2011/12. His average score was 84% and his thesis won the Acoustical Society of America Newman medal in 2011. Sheldon you are welcome back any time!

Institute of Acoustics Branch Meeting

On Wednesday 17th April 2013 the best awarding winning students from the MSc in Acoustic course 2012 will be presenting at the London branch at WSP, Chancery Lane. The presentation is entitled, "Singing, Privacy and Insulation". The students are Shane Sugrue, Graham Shaw and Rob Burrell. Should be fun!

IOA Spring Conference Abstract

An abstract has been submitted for consideration by the Institute of Acoustics for the Spring Conference, Nottingham 13-14 May 2013. The paper is entitled, "Vocal Stress and Acoustics in Schools - A Pilot Study". The presentation will be given by PhD candidate Nick Durup on behalf of Sharps Redmore Acoustics Consltants and London South Bank University at Nottingham

Simon Khan gives guest lecture

On Friday 22nd February Simon Khan of Mott MacDonald come to give a guest lecture kicking off our new series of Masterclasses on acoustics. Simon's talk on acoustic comfort gave our students an insight into the latest developments in the field. Many thanks Simon.

Newman Medalist - Rob Burrell



On the 8th February 2013, for the first time a second student from the same LSBU cohort was awarded the Newman medal by the Acoustical Society of America. Rob Burrell of Sandy Brown Associates was found worthy of the medal. The project was entitled, " Acoustic privacy in offices".  His work was outstanding and I'm sure there's a paper or two in the dissertation. Well done Rob.

Newman Medalist - Shane Sugrue



On the 6th February 2013, MSc student Shane Sugrue was award the Newman medal from the Acoustical Society of America. His dissertation was entitled, "Singing and Space :  A comparative study of choral singers and perceptions of auditorium acoustics in three venue types". The Bradford Newman medal is awarded for excellence in the study of acoustics and its application in architecture.  I know Shane had to fly round the world to get the data, and I learnt that Chinese balloons are not so robust!

New PhD Student - Gizem Okten

Starting on 21st February 2013 Gizem Okten will join the Acoustics Group as an LSBU Research Scholar. Her doctoral research is entitled, "Vocalists and Acoustics - the use of furnishing to improve performance". The research will be undertaken at the Royal Academy of Music. Welcome to the group!
