MSc students visit Tate Modern

On the 20th March 2012 the MSc students visited the Whispering Gallery of St Paul's Cathedral - where they were quiet. So then we visited Tate Modern's turbine hall, where we made a lot of noise trying happy clapping and native calls! It did seem to work, so here's to our first video blog:)

RBA Acoustic Prize Winner 2012

On the 16th March 2012 RBA Acoustics awarded the MSc Environmental and Architectural Acoustics prize to Tamara Potaz. Tamara's project was entitled, "Something not to shout about- An evaluation of the implementation of the City of Buenos Aires’ acoustic pollution legislation and the measures applied to mitigate it". Prize giving is on the 26th April 2012 when the cheque arrives! Well Done Tamara!

RBA Acoustics Seminar

On 13th March 2012 Russell Richardson of RBA Acoustics gave a seminar to the Masters students in Environmental and Architectural Acoustics. Russell gave an overview of life of the consultants and a briefing on the workings of the Assocationof Noise Consultants. This time we ended up eating a chocolate fudge cake!

Peter Mapp Presents 120 Years on Intelligibility

On the 6th March 2012, for the 4th year Peter Mapp came in to teach a Master Class on Intelligibility. Peter then gave some insightful demonstration on the meaning of speech quality. It was enjoyed by all the students.

Third paper submitted to Acoustics 2012

The third Acoustics Group paper was submitted to Acoustics 2012. The paper will be presented in the Education session by PhD Candidate Georgia Zepidou and is entitled, "Introducing acoustics to classical musicians". Another reason to go to Nantes!

Seminar on the latest developments

On the 24th February 2012 a public seminar will be held at 1:30 at CEREB on Keyworth Street, SE1 0AA. The seminar will be given by Dr Stephen Dance on the latest developments of the Acoustics Group. All are welcome!

IoA London Branch Meeting: Student Projects

On the 18th April 2012 the Institute of Acoustics London Branch will host three presentations given by our MSc students. Presented are three of the best projects from 2011, all of which were put forward for the RBA Acoustics prize. The first dissertation was a collaboration with the Royal Academy of Music analysing the acoustics of the Jack Lyons theatre in an attempt to improve the enivronment for the musicians in the pit without affecting the performance. The second project was an experimental study on the validation of the Speech Transmission Index in real spaces compared to the tradtional test method; again this was with the kind collaboration of the Royal Academy of Music. The final piece of research was to built and test a much cheaper binaural head and torso simulator. See you all at WSP, Cancery Lane 6pm!
