Inter-Noise 2020 Abstract : Scattering of waves in porous rigid materials

The scattering of acoustic waves propagating in porous rigid 3D stereolithographical materials that are made of resin, has been investigated. 3D stereolithographical materials were obtained using a form of rapid prototyping that allows complex solid objects to be manufactured directly from3D computer models in the form of successive layers of light-cured resin. Relative variation of velocity and attenuation of 3D materials in air filled and water filled media has been predicted at normal and oblique directions.The scattering perturbation is similar to diffusion waves at low frequency while dispersion velocity and attenuation change with respect to square root of angular frequency and with respect to angular frequency at high frequency respectively. Abstract submitted to international virtual congress Internoise 2020

An abstract of an research article has been recently submitted to Inter-Noise 2020 International E-Congress. The article is entitled “Noise Hazard From Small Volumes of Hydrogen-Air Mixture Blasts” and has been written by Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina of the Acoustics Research Group and Dr Anthony Averill and Dr James Ingram  of the LSBU Hydrogen Hazard unit. The international acoustics e-congress will take place virtually online and will be hosted in Seoul, Korea between 23 and 26 August 2020. We hope we can meet virtually and enjoy this innovative eCongress.

PhD candidate Doug Shearer submits his thesis

On the 11th May 2020 PhD candidate Douglas Shearer submitted his doctoral thesis. He thesis is entitled, "Case studies in the Absorption of Low Frequency Sound in Music Rooms". The work was supported by the Royal Academy of Music over the past 4 years. Well done Doug!

Acoustics Community responds to CoVID19

The Acoustics Community  (Business, Academia, Local Government) have come together to response to the Government Lockdown caused by the CoVID19 outbreak. Through the Institute of Acoustics and with the financial support of the UK Acoustics Network Prof Stephen Dance and Ms Lindsay McIntyre, KSG Acoustics, have created the Quiet Project. A national survey to monitor the environmental noise across the UK. This initiative has the kind support of Campbell Associates and ANV Measurement Systems to assist with the instrumentation necessary to take the measurements. The Acoustics Group help accredited IOA Courses at Derby University

On 6th March 2020 Derby University received a visit of an Institute of Acoustics ( IOA ) Education Committee delegation as part of the application process to re-accredit their IOA courses. Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina acted as accreditation panel member reviewing the courses and offering feedback. It was encouraging to witness the good quality of the IOA acoustics courses run at Derby University. The panel was toured around the modern and pleasant campus and treated to a good lunch.

LSBU Acoustics students visit world famous School of Architecture

LSBU Acoustics postgraduate students and Architecture students from the famous Architectural Association (AA) in London, have recently attended together a series of  workshops, seminars and tours organised at both institutions. The activities took place on 20^th and 27th Feb 2020 and aimed at students to raise their awareness of each others’ disciplines,  promote collaboration and encourage exchange of knowledge, perspectives,  and insights relevant in the architectural design process. The educational exercise has been facilitated by Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina and by former LSBU MSc Acoustics student and academic staff at AA, Laura de Azcarate. Early evaluation among students who took part has shown that  the  educational exercise has been  a clear success. Further developments and refinements are planned for the next academic year. Please watch this space
