abstract on Noise Exposure accepted for ICA 2019
The International Congress in Acoustics (ICA) 2019 has accepted the abstract of a paper entitled 'Noise exposure from explosions during handling small volumes of hydrogen/air mixture'. The paper was written by Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina, Dr Tony Averill and Dr James Ingram and will be presented in Aachen (Germany) during the renowned 23rd International Congress of Acoustics which will take place between 09 and 13 Sept 2019. Dr Stephen Dance to act an external examiner for Liverpool University
Dr Dance is acting as external examiner for Liverpool University. He is examining a MPhil thesis by Ms Thamasha Samarasinghe. The thesis is entitled, "Airflow resistivity measurement of alkaline earth silicate materials between room temperature and 800o C".
Abstract submitted to Meta 2019
An abstract has been submitted to Meta 2019, the 10th International Conference on Metamaterials, Photonics and Plasmonics. The conference will be hosted in Lisbon 23-26th July 2019. The paper is a joint collaboration between London South Bank University, University of Le Mans and the University Polytechnic of Valencia and is entitled, "Deep sub-wavelengths materials for controlling sound diffusion: Experimental validation and metadiffusers".
Lilo experiments completed
On the 1st March 2019 PhD candidate Doug Shearer completed his research for the Royal Academy of Music. The final experiment - establishing the absorption of lilos was completed and the data analysed. The work will be presented at Inter-Noise 2019 in Madrid. Hope to see you there!

CIBSE Head of Research visits LSBU
On 27 Feb 2019 Dr Anastasia Mylona (Head of Research at Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers, CIBSE) came to LSBU to discuss future acoustic research collaboration and industrial cooperation .The meeting served to establish and confirm CIBSE support to a future PhD research project being set up between LSBU (Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina) and Imtech (Suzana Zekic). During the tour around LSBU test and lab facilities, Dr Mylona really enjoyed her first experience being in an anechoic chamber and the great view from K2 roof top on a sunny day

IOA London Branch Urban Soundscape design talk at LSBU
The second IOA London Branch meeting of the year was held on 20th February 2019 at London South Bank University. The meeting was moved from its usual venue to a LSBU lecture theatre to accommodate the oversubscribed evening talk. Around 130 people attended Prof Jian Kang talk entitled “Designing soundscape in urban open public spaces”. As some attendees commented, the talk was a mind opener and highly informative on the urban soundscape paradigm. Many questions on the topic were posed to Prof Kang reflecting the interest of the audience . After the talk, the LSBU Student Union was the follow up venue to relax, network and drink student priced beer. The Acoustics group wishes to thank Prof Kang for visiting LSBU and offering a valuable talk.

Students measure Henry Wood Hall
On the 7th February 2019 a joint visit to Henry Wood Hall was organised for the Masters and IOA Diploma students. The students undertook an ISO 3382-1 assessment of the hall. In addition floor re-reverberation was measured with the help of B&K using our LAN XI measurement system. We think they enjoyed the afternoon and their visit to the vaults!
