Royal Opera House Music Stands

On the 8th June 2017 the Acoustics Group tested music stands for the Royal Opera House as part of a refurbishment project with John Bernays. Five stands were tested under free field conditions to establish their full frequency insertion loss when sheet music was placed on each stand. We hope the data help the Royal Opera House make an informed choice!

Museum of Portable Sound records in the Anechoic Chamber

On 24 May 2017, the Museum of Portable Sound staff took sound recordings at LSBU anechoic and reverberant chambers. Museum Director John Kannenberg and Curatorial Assistant Cristina Sousa Martínez recorded material for their museum’s upcoming audio tour presentation of their current museum of portable sound project

The Museum of Portable Sound http://museumofportablesound.com is a London-based portable museum dedicated to the collection, preservation, and presentation of sounds as objects of culture. The museum’s sounds exist as digital audio files that are organised into thematically curated galleries located on a single iPhone 4S. The museum also hosts a series of temporary exhibitions of sound-based artwork.

Peter Turner gives an invited lecture on the Building Regulations

On Thursday 18/0517 Building Sound Insulation expert Peter Turner came to visit LSBU Acoustics Group and delivered an insightful Masterclass to over 40 Diploma, MSc Acoustics and Architecture students. Peter presented some suggestions for improvement of the current Building Regulations. He was impressed by the Acoustic lab facilities and food of London Road canteen.

Final Tests at IMAX Waterloo completed

First thing on the 9th May 2017 the Acoustics Group tested the final configuration for the Opera stream sound system at the IMAX cinema, Waterloo. This test was to establish the interaural cross correlation of a binaural measurement using different delays and gain levels. The final subjective tests will begin in June to determine if all the calculations were correct!

Abstract submitted to Symposium on Performance Science

An abstract by Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina has been submitted and recently accepted by the 2017 International Symposium on Performance Science (http://www.performancescience.org/ISPS2017/ ) to be held on 30 August  to 02 September 2017 in Reykjavík, Iceland. The research paper will report the latest data and insights on a novel educational initiative to embed basic acoustics knowledge in performance music studies.

1st Meeting of the Sound Study Group

On the 8th May 2017 the Royal Opera House held the inaugural meeting of the Sound Study Group. John Bernays organised a mult-disciplinary group formed from surgeons, acousticians, audiologists, speech pathologists and singers! We hope to help the chorus of the Royal Opera House through occupational voice solutions.

Royal Academy of Music Exit Audiometry Tests

On the 2nd and 3rd May 2017 the Royal Academy of Music arranged for their students to undertake Exit audiometric testing. This is the 7th year of the Exit study with 32 students or 10% of the population completing the tests. We wish all the students good luck in their finals!
