Anechoic Chamber Uprated

On the 4th August 2014 the London South Bank University Anechoic chamber was uprated mechanically and electrically. The hoist has been certified to 1.2 tonnes to allow larger machines to be tested. In addition, a new 3 phase soft start power supply (32 Amps at  415 Volts) has been installed, along with a high resolution web cam. This allows larger electrical motors to be tested. For example this 11 kW GP12 siren!

Klaxon Siren Sound Power Tests

On the 1st August 2014 after a month's of planning the first Klaxon siren, a 7.5 kW GP10, was acoustically tested for sound power level for Haztek International with representatives from Chevron present - Dr Kurt Bozenhardt and Mr Alex Stresyuk . This was a team effort from the concrete lab, the metal workshop, and the acousticians. The smaller siren reached levels above 135 dB! Yet it was barely audible outside the anechoic chamber!

The Acoustics Group visit the Royal College of Music

On the 16th July 2014 Dr Stephen Dance and Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina visited the Centre of Performance Science at the Royal College of Music. During discussion several potential collaborations were identified including journal papers, seminars and joint research on vocal stress as part of the AHRC Musical Impact. It was a pleasure to be taken by Prof. Aaron Williamon around the historic buildings. Ice creams all round!

MSc programme approved by the Institute of Acoustics

The MSc in Environmental and Architectural Acoustics has been approved, subject to conditions, as fully meeting the educational requirements for corporate membership of the Institute of Acoustics. This will be of great benefit to past and present students alike!

AES Paper Accepted for Publication

The Journal of Audio Engineering Society accepted for publication a paper based on the doctoral thesis of Lorenzo Morales. The paper is entitled, Validation od the revised speech transmission index for the English language under reverberant conditions: real-life versus headphone listening tests." The paper was co-authored by Dr Stephen Dance, Prof. Bridget Shield and Mr Glenn Leembruggen. Well done Lorenzo!

Prof Bridget Shield becomes IOA Past President

At the AGM of the Institute of Acoustics Prof. Bridget Shield took over from Prof Trevor Cox, another LSBU Alumni, as IOA Past President. At the event presents were exchanged,  Bridget presented Trevor with a thank you gift and Bridget received a gift from the new incoming President Mr Egan. Trevor then gave a very well received joint IOA/AES presentation on the Sonic Wonderland.

Musical Acoustics Group at the Royal Academy of Music

On the 4th July 2014 the Institute of Acoustics Musical Acoustics Group held their summer seminar at the Royal Academy of Music's Dukes Hall. The theme of the events was the acoustics of organs. A full programme was presented which culminated in a performance on the new Elton John sponsored Kuhn organ as played by Chris Stanbury, although this took a bit of last minute organisation! Thanks Chris!
