PhD student Nick Durup presents at ICA 2013

On the 6th June 2013 PhD student Nick Durup presented his pilot study on the vocal stress of teachers and the effects of the acoustic environment. The paper was presented a the ICA in the acoustics of schools session. Nick had to think on his feet during his presentation!

International Congress on Acoustics 2013


The 165th Acoustical Society of America held a joint conference with the Canadian Acoustical Association and the International Congress on Acoustics. The conference lasted all week and was held in Montreal. The Acoustics Group was represented by Steve Dance, Nick Durup and Ben Dymock. The conference ended appropriately with the Canadian F1 Grand Prix.

MSc student presents at IOA Spring Conference 2013

On the 13th May 2013 MSc student, Eugenie St Cluque presented her research on cycling vibration to the Institute of Acoustics Spring Conference at Nottingham. Eugenie's paper was entitled, "Preliminary research of health issues in whole body vibration induced by cycling". Eugenie is continuing to investigate this topic in parallel to undertaking her dissertation research into the design of a new entrance to an Oxford museum.

RBA Acoustics Give Presentation

On the 10th May 2013 Russell Richardson of RBA Acoustics gave an overview of life of acoustic consultants and a briefing on the workings of the Association of Noise Consultants. This time he had to run off to a luncheon held to reward his loyal employees

Svantek visits the LSBU Acoustics lab

On the 3rd May 2013 John Shelton came to demonstrate the latest Svantek equipment, Svan 971 sound level meter. John used the slim meter to demonstrate some acoustic principles to the MSc students through measurements parameters. At the end Bill Holdsworth and Bob Peters joined in on the discussion.

New instrumentation - Voice Care

On the 30th April 2013 Professor Alessio Carullo from the Politecnico di Torino Electronics department demonstrated a new voice stress analyser - Voice Care. He was kind enough to leave the instrumentation with the Acoustics Group so that it could be compared with the KayPentax APM analyser. The ERASMUS students will be undertaking the tests to verify the quality of the measurements.

Politecnico di Torino visit

On the 29th and 30th April 2013 Prof Arianna Astolfi and Prof Alessio Carullo from the Politecnico di Torino visited London South Bank University. Arianna presented her research in Building Physics and Acoustics and discussed potential collaboration starting with the recent progress made by the Masters students, Elena and Daniela.
