Acoustics and Sustainability at Small Wind Power

On 23rd April Dr Stephen Dance was invited to present at the 1st International Small Wind Conference held at BRE, Watford. The conference was oversubscribed with more than 200 delegates over the 2 days. It was good to talk to other engineers with similar problems!

LPO seminar held jointly with tthe BBC

On 20th April 2009 the Acoustics Group gave a joint seminar with the BBC to the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall. The presentation covered aspects of the research undertaken and future development opportunities. The conductor, Vladimir Jurowski, detailed how Gyldnebourne Opera House had implemented our ideas to improve the acoustic, as had Henry Wood Hall. A lively discussion took place, as the orchestra laughed at the jokes.

Acoustics Group at Lord of the Rings

On April 14th 2009 the London Philharmonic Orchestra performed a live version of their sound track to Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring. Georgia Zepidou was 'conveniently' undertaking noise exposure measurements at the Royal Albert Hall. In her defense, she also took measurements during all the rehearsals. Great excuse George!

Euronoise 2009 Edinburgh

The Acoustics Group has had 10 abstracts accepted for the Institute of Acoustics Euronoise 2009 conference to be held in Edinburgh in October. The papers cover a range of topics from music rooms, through to schools and hospitals. For devices ranging from iPods to sound absorbing mirrors. The research encompasses environmental noise, room acoustics, noise exposure, speech intelligibility and auralisation. See you all in Scotland!

At Radio Sweden Concert

Stephen Dance and Georgia Zepidou meet the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and Radio Sweden on Friday 2nd April to discuss future cooperation. We then attended a concert broadcast by Radio Sweden. A special thanks goes to Birgit for her organisational skills and for introducing us to the pleasure of Swedish bread!

At the Royal College of Music Stockholm

Dr Stephen Dance and Georgia Zepidou were invited to the Royal College of Music, Stockholm (KMH) along with the Royal College of Music (London) to discuss future cooperation. They spend a couple of sunny days in Sweden drinking very weak beer, thanks to Johan!

Low frequency absorption test

On Friday 27th March the reverberation chmaber of the acoustics lab was used to establish the effectiveness of porous absorber in bags to act as a low frequency absorber. Many builders bags were filled to establish if 63 Hz reverberation time could be reduced. Thanks to all who helped shift the bags!
