Dr Aygun is the new MSc Course Director

From 1st August 2019 Dr Haydar Aygun will take over from Professor Stephen Dance as the Course Director for the Masters in Environmental and Architectural Acoustics at London South Bank University. Dr Aygun lectures extensively on the course and has experience of course directorship. He wished to thank Steve for his work developing the course over the past 16 years. Here's to the next 16 years and bigger and better things!

Paper submitted to Symposium on Acoustic Metamaterials

A paper has been submitted by PhD Candidate Eric Ballestero for the 2nd Symposium on Acoustics Metamaterials meeting to be held in Ischia, Italy 9-11th October 2019. The paper is a joint collaboration with Le Mans University and is entitled, "Experimental Validation of a 3D printed Quadratic Residue Metadiffuser". Ischia also happens to be a beautiful island!

Papers at Reproduced Sound 2019

The Acoustics Group is well represented at the 35th Institute of Acoustics Reproduced Sound conference to be held in Bristol 19-21 November 2019. PhD candidate Rodrigo Sanchez-Pizani will be presented his research into "Subjective evaluation of permanently installed microphones in classrooms".  This is followed by Visiting Professor Peter Mapp on thought provoking subjects, " What we do, if we didn't have STI?"  and "Acoustic and Audio Survey of Some Churches". London Underground Big Noise Problem

Dr  Luis Gomez-Agustina was interviewed by Wired about the noise levels on London Underground. He outlined the issue of the high noise levels in an article entitled, "We need to talk about the London Underground's Big Noise Problem".  He went on to discuss possible health issues and acoustic solutions to the problem. It has been very popular on Apple News #4 in the world currently!

Acoustics Team visit Nuaire

Ventilation systems.designer and manufacturer Nuaire kindly hosted a visit from LSBU Acoustics Group. Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina and LSBU PhD candidate and Imtech engineer Susana Zekic toured the company test and manufacturing facilities located in South Wales. The visit proved very valuable and will inform the next step of the PhD research.

MSc students present at IOA London Branch

Three of the best final projects from the 2017-18 MSc Acoustics course at LSBU were today presented at IOA London Branch. Jack Traveller Graeme Littleford and John Cane delivered excellent presentations  which were highly regarded by  a large audience which posed numerous questions and commentary. New video competition from the ANC

The Association of Noise Consultants is sounding out ideas for a STEM challenge The challenge is to ask those studying acoustics to enter a short video exploring a particular area of their expertise to show case to schools acoustics and STEM. Each video will be judged as part of a new Noise Abatement Society award John Connell STEM award to be held at the Palace of Westminster. Videos by 13th September and more info here.

BBC Interview on Music Event at London Zoo

Professor Stephen Dance was interviewed by the BBC London News team on Friday 5th July concerning evening events at London Zoo. The BBC were interested in if the animal would be affected by the music events hosted by the Zoo. Professor Dance explained that the distance from the event was of critical important and that snakes would be of most concern due to ground borne vibration from sub-woofer loudspeakers!

UKAN Demonstration built - Room Modes

Masters student Stefano Mandula has built an acoustic demonstration based on room modes. His experiment uses Christmas baubles on a fidget spinner which spins round when a standing wave is formed - around 315 Hz. This demonstration was built for the EPSRC UK Acoustics Network.

UKAN Demo built - Impedance Tube

Masters student Karina Riveroll has built a demonstration of the impedance tube - Kundt experiment. This is to illustrate to students through visual means how the standing waves and their harmonics are formed. This research was funded by the EPSRC UK Acoustics Network.

PhD Candidate Rodrigo Sanchez wins Bursary

PhD Candidate Rodrigo Sanchez wins a bursary worth £3000 from Schoms.  Schoms is an academic organisation who's remit is to design and develop new learning environments and to deploy learning technologies.  The work is to help fund his research into lecture capture quality assessment with King's College London. Well done Rodrigo!

Work Experience Student Joins LSBU Acoustics Group

For one week work experience student from Hollyfield Sixth Form, Loki Dunn, joined London South Bank University Building Services and Acoustics Groups. Loki assisted the PhD students with their laboratory experiments, took a hearing test, meet with the Royal Academy of Music. For a finale he assisted with an BBC interview on Music Events held in London Zoo! We hope he enjoyed himself, learnt about acoustics and will apply his maths skills in the future. Good luck Loki!
