The Acoustics Group at a UKAN Soundscape Workship

The LSBU Acoustic Group represented by Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina has participated in a workshop organised by UKAN network. The event entitled"overcoming traditional acoustic challenges to urban planning and development" took place at the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health in London. High profile speakers were in attendance and valuable discussion took place to advance the integration of SoundScapes in urban planning

Three former students to give IOA Branch meeting presentations

Three former students from the Masters course in Environmental and Architectural Acoustics programme are to give the annual IOA London branch address on dissertation based research. John Cane will present cycle vibrations, Graeme Littleford on Voice Alarm systems and Jack Travellers on Louvre guidance. A great opportunity to showcase all the good work done by the Acoustics Group!

Inter-Noise 19 paper on Cycling-Induced Hand-Arm Vibration

A paper  written by former LSBU MSc Acoustics student John Cane and Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina  has been presented and published at Internoise 2019 conference. The paper is entitled “Determination of Urban Cycling-Induced Hand-Arm Vibration and Mitigation”. The oral presentation was conveyed in a very clear and informative fashion. The original topic  generated a fair amount  of interest judging by the number of interesting questions that were posed to John during question time.

Dr Bob Peters has passed away


Dr Robert Peters, Bob to his friends, and he had many, has passed away. Bob taught at the North East Surrey College of Science and Technology in the 1980s and 90s, where he retired. He then came out of retirement to join London South Bank University where he taught for 20 years. He was a fantastic lecturer bringing the maths to life through example. He was awarded the Stephenson Medal by the Institute of Acoustics in 2013 for his long service to acoustics. He set up the IOA Certificate programmer and was a founder of the IOA Diploma course and a long time Distance Learning lecturer. He will be missed by friends, family and the acoustics world.

PhD candidate Doug Shearer presents at Inter-Noise 2019

PhD candidate Doug Shearer presented his latest research work at Inter-Noise 2019 held in Madrid. Doug's paper was entitled, "The creation of a flexible acoustic using airbeds". His presentation sparked some smiles and much interest into the mechanism of the absorption!

The Acoustics Group at Inter-Noise 2019

From t he 16-19th June 2019 the Spanish Acoustical Society hosted Inter-Noise 2019 in Madrid. The Acoustics Group were very noticeable in their new branded shirts! The Acoustics Group were represented by in the form of 11 staff and students. Four past Masters students presented, as well as 2 PhD students and all 3 members of staff. Professor Dance assisted with the bid for Inter-Noise 2022 to be held in Glasgow and represented the Institute of Acoustics at official meetings, And most importantly I think everyone had a good time!

Haydar presents at Inter-Noise 2019, Madrid

At Inter-Noise 2019 held in Madrid over 16-19th June 2019 Dr Aygun presented his joint work with the Civil Engineers of London South Bank University. His paper was entitled, "Investigation of acoustical and structural parameters of recycled glass bead composite material". This was very original work which demonstrated how collaboration can have mutual benefits! 

Steve presents on Feathers at Inter-Noise 2019

At Inter-Noise 2019 hosted by the Spanish Acoustical Society Professor Stephen Dance presented his joint work with the Dyson School of Engineering at Imperial College. The paper was presented to a packed audience on "Sound absorption characteristics of air laid non woven feather mats". The first question from the audience was, "Were they fire resistant?". Which of course they are!

Luis presents at the Inter-Noise 2019 conference

A paper  written by Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina and former IOA Diploma student John Barnard  has been presented and published at Internoise 2019. The paper was entitled “ Practical and  technical suitability perceptions of sound sources and test signals used in room acoustics testing ”. The presentation was very well received by the audience  judging by the question and comments during question time and informal discussions that ensued after the presentation.

A paper on underground stations VA systems presented at Inter-Noise 2019

A paper  written by Graeme Littleford and Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina  has been presented and published at Internoise 2019 conference. The paper was entitled “Acoustic design of voice alarm systems in an occupied platform ”. The presentation generated interest and was well received. Some questions were posed to Graeme during question time and informal discussions ensued after the presentation between members of the audience and the authors.

A paper on Acoustic Louvres directivity presented at Inter-Noise

A paper  written by Jack Traveller and Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina  has been presented and published at Internoise 2019 conference. The paper was entitled “Validation of guidance for the prediction of the directivity index of ventilation louvres”. The clear and well conveyed presentation generated interest and was well received by the audience who posed some good questions.

A paper on sound transmission using SEA technique presented at Inter-noise

A paper  written by Juan Luis Rioperez Rodriguez, Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina  and Robert Adnitt  has been presented and published at Internoise 2019 conference.  The paper was entitled “Acoustic analysis of sound transmission in a mixed-use development using Statistical Energy Analysis”. The clear and well conveyed presentation generated interest judging by the several good questions posed by the audience to Juan Luis who addressed them knowledgeably and convincingly.

New Acoustics Group PhD student presents at Inter-noise

A paper written by new PhD student Suzana Zekic and her director of studies Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina  has been presented and published at Internoise 2019 conference. The paper was entitled “ Towards the determination of Acoustic Characteristics of ventilation Ducts in the Built environment”. The information  was effectively conveyed by Suzana and the presentation generated a fair amount of interest with follow up discussions and comments after the presentation.

Peter Mapp's busy Summer Schedule!


Visiting professor Dr Peter Mapp is scheduled to have a busy Summer and Autumn with abstracts submitted to the AES convention in New York on his research into stadium acoustics and two further abstracts submitted to the IOA’s Reproduced Sound conference relating to the measurement of speech intelligibility and his  research into the acoustics of churches. Peter is currently busy peer reviewing papers for the AES New York convention where he will also be giving a tutorial on Psychoacoustics and chairing several standards meetings on acoustics and audio. He is also currently working on a chapter on the intelligibility of sound systems for a soon to be published handbook on sound system design as well as working on completion of revisions to BS 7827 (sound systems design) and IEC standard BSEN60268-16  (measurement of speech intelligibility) which he also chairs.

LSBU IOA Diploma End of Exams Celebrations

The 2018-19 IOA Diploma students at LSBU celebrated on 7th June 2019 the end of the taught part of the course and the end of the final exams. The teaching team joined the celebrations at the LSBU Student Union and congratulate them for reaching this far in the course!

Richard Seaton awarded by Doctorate

On the 7th June 2019, PhD Candidate for the Open University Richard Seaton gave a robust defence his thesis. His work was on pitch drift in A Coppella singing which was examined by  Professor Stephen Dance of London South Bank University and Professor Patrick Gaydecki of Manchester University. Richard is a choir singer and a retired electronic engineer who is trying to understand ensemble conditions and the reasons for the pitch drift. Well done Richard

Association of Noise Consultants Conference

Professor Stephen Dance was invited to be a  judge for the Association of Noise Consultants. Each year the ANC host a competition for the best design work announced at the annual conference. This year the conference was held at the Crown Plaza in Manchester on 6th June 2019. The guest speaker was Maggie Philbin who interviewed the judges on stage! It was a great night and congratulations to all the winners!

UKAN exchange workshop with UCL Bartlett School of Architecture

On the 5th June 2019 the Soundscape team from UCL Bartlett School of Architecture came on a UKAN sponsored visit to meet the researchers of the Acoustics Group at London South Bank University.  The initial meeting was to introduce each other to the on going research topics being undertaken. An exchange will happen in September when we go to visit their new campus in the Olympic Park.

Recognition for Dr Haydar Aygun

Dr Haydar Aygun has been recognised by the Elsevier publishing house for his work as a reviewer for scientific journal - Applied Acoustics. This kind of task is rarely seen externally so it's a chance to shout about the peer review process which is fundamental to the progress of science!

Abstract submitted to IOA Musical Acoustics 2019

Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina and former IOA Diploma student Jonathan Bernard have submitted an abstract fot the UKAN supported IOA Musical Acoustics meeting to be held at Henry Wood Hall on 9th October 2019. Association of Noise Consultants Conference 2019

The annual Association of Noise Consultants conference is to be held at the Plaza Hotel in Manchester on 6th June 2019. At this year's meeting Professor Bridget Shield will be presenting her work with Dr Emma Greenland on "Hearing and Vulnerable Groups". Hope to see you there!
