LSBU Architects visit the lab
On the 21st March 2019 the Architecture postgraduates student from London South Bank University visited the Acoustics Laboratory. They really enjoyed the talk by Dr Stephen Dance and then felt very relaxed!
Architectural Association Visits the Acoustics Lab
On the 21st March 2019 students from the Architectural Association School of Architecture visited the acoustics lab. Former Masters student, Laura de Azcarate teaches the architecture students and for the second year bought them along to experience the anechoic and reverberation chambers. We hope they had a a truly great experience!

Graeme Littleford awarded ASA student medal
MSc student Graeme Littleford of the class 2017-18, has been awarded the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) Robert Bradford student medal. The Robert Bradford Newman Student Medal for Merit in Architectural Acoustics recognizes excellence in the study of acoustics and its application to architecture. The program honours outstanding students at schools of architecture and architectural engineering throughout the world. The judging panel based their decision on Graeme’s MSc Final project dissertation supervised by Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina. Grame’s final project, undertook work on determining the effects of passengers on the performance of Voice Alarm systems on underground platforms. An international conference paper on the work will be presented at Internoise 2019 (Madrid 16-19 June 2019) by Graeme and Luis. Congratulations Graeme.
External Examiner for Thamasha Samarasinghe thesis defence
On the 13th March 2019 Thamasha Samarahsinghe successfully defended her MPhil thesis entitled, "Experimental determination of airflow resistance for porous materials at high temperature". Dr Stephen Dance was the external examiner for the University of Liverpool. Congratulations go to Thamasha on her robust defence!

Royal Opera House invests in Acoustics Research
The Royal Opera House has furthered its investment in acoustics research. The currently funded joint collaboration is being extended to include the construction of diffusing panels based on novel designs. This work will be undertaken over the summer as they take time to build!
New Focusrite Sound Card Purchased
A new 8 channel Focusrite 18i20 sound card has been purchased to make quicker and more accurate acoustics measurements. The system will be used to measure diffusion coefficients and source sound power with high accuracy using 24 bit / 192 kHz sampling. We think the students will enjoy playing with the new toy!
SU2CATT Purchased for Education
A site license for the software conversion package Sketchup to CATT upgrade has been purchased by the Acoustics Group. SU2CATT will primarily be used by the Masters students at London South Bank University and by the PhD students for room acoustic investigations. It should make life easier for the students!
COMSOL Purchased for Research
COMSOL with the Acoustics Modelling module has been purchased by the Acoustics Group. The software will be primarily used for research into metamaterial design by the PhD students. Let's hope the investment is worth the cost!
Royal Academy of Music Continue to Fund Acoustics Research
On the 12th March 2019 the Royal Academy of Music agreed to continue to fund acoustics research with London South Bank University. Since 2007 these two institutions have collaborated on hearing and the sound of performance. The current funding will support PhD student Doug Shearer complete his doctoral thesis on low frequency sound absorption.

Memorial Lecture Given at the ISCE Conference
Visiting professor Dr Peter Mapp, was invited to give this year’s Warren-Barnet memorial lecture at the Institute of Sound & Communications annual seminar and exhibition. Peter spoke about The use of Psychoacoustics in the PA and sound system design to a packed audience of over 75 delegates. This was the 5th time that Peter has been invited to give the annual lecture in its 34 year history. The lecture discussed the acoustic properties of the ear, sound localization, loudness and frequency response assessment as well as spatial hearing and the effects of echoes, reflections and the inherent latency in digital systems and the effect this can have on intelligibility and visual synchronization and the associated consequences for the hard of hearing.

abstract on Noise Exposure accepted for ICA 2019
The International Congress in Acoustics (ICA) 2019 has accepted the abstract of a paper entitled 'Noise exposure from explosions during handling small volumes of hydrogen/air mixture'. The paper was written by Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina, Dr Tony Averill and Dr James Ingram and will be presented in Aachen (Germany) during the renowned 23rd International Congress of Acoustics which will take place between 09 and 13 Sept 2019. We hope you enjoy the paper and hope to see you in Aachen .

Dr Stephen Dance to act an external examiner for Liverpool University
Dr Dance is acting as external examiner for Liverpool University. He is examining a MPhil thesis by Ms Thamasha Samarasinghe. The thesis is entitled, "Airflow resistivity measurement of alkaline earth silicate materials between room temperature and 800o C".
Abstract submitted to Meta 2019
An abstract has been submitted to Meta 2019, the 10th International Conference on Metamaterials, Photonics and Plasmonics. The conference will be hosted in Lisbon 23-26th July 2019. The paper is a joint collaboration between London South Bank University, University of Le Mans and the University Polytechnic of Valencia and is entitled, "Deep sub-wavelengths materials for controlling sound diffusion: Experimental validation and metadiffusers".
Lilo experiments completed
On the 1st March 2019 PhD candidate Doug Shearer completed his research for the Royal Academy of Music. The final experiment - establishing the absorption of lilos was completed and the data analysed. The work will be presented at Inter-Noise 2019 in Madrid. Hope to see you there!
