Heliport Project is Go!

On the 23rd January 2017 the London Borough of Wandsworth and the Acoustics Group of London South Bank University agreed to collaborate on noise monitoring around the Battersea Heliport. The project will run for 6 months to establish the sound levels around the three boroughs which surround the heliport.

IMAX Cinema show New York Met Opera

On the 21st January 2017 the IMAX cinema at Waterloo, London presented the New York Metropolitan Opera - Romeo and Juliet. The cinema sound system was acoustical setup by Eric Ballestero of the Acoustics Group. The cinema sound engineer reported that the opera had never sound better!

Listening to London Collaboration


Listening to London is a collaboration with Fosters+Partners and the Noise Abatement Society to address the need of Future Cities has been formed through the Catapult of Things Connected. The research will create a new low cost extendable real-time networked noise monitoring system for London. Using the LoRaWAN technology the team will create an Internet of Things using the Raspberry Pi to create a noise map of London.

Material Testing of Hung Fabric

On the 17th January 2017, the team undertook material testing in the Acoustics Laboratory of London South Bank University. The materials were all hung fabric some of which did have acoustic qualities! As ever, advertised as an acoustic material but with no dataset! ISO 354:2003 seperated the wheat from the chaff!

Royal College of Art Student Visit

The Royal College of Art students on the new Information Experience Design course visit the Acoustics Laboratory here at London South Bank University on the 13th January 2017. The students enjoyed their stay in the anechoic chamber and had some weird and interesting ideas for projects. The group were led by Mike Wyeld who was later joined by visitors from the National Maritime Museum and the Greenwich Observatory!

Blog reaches 100,000 hits

The blog has now run for 10 years and has reached 100,000 hits reviewing the 866 news items produced by the Acoustics Group. The students have won 31 awards from the Institute of Acoustics, the Acoustical Society of America, RBA Acoustics, I-INCE, CIBSE and the Audio Engineering Society. Emeritus Professor Shield became the President of the Institute of Acoustics, forming close links with the IOA. The Acoustics Group is accredited to run the IOA Certificate and the IOA Diploma to 2018. CIBSE has also accredited the Masters course to 2019. Eight PhD students have completed their PhD studies. We also celebrated 10 years of collaboration with the Royal Academy of Music -a main sponsor of our group.

Welcome to 2017

Welcome to 2017 and the new expanded Acoustics Group teaching team. We have lots to look forward to in the coming year. In February we host the IOA the Art of Being a Consultant, in July the International Congress on Sound and Vibration comes to London. In October 2017 we are running the IOA Certificate of Competence in Environmental Noise Measurement. Lots going on and more to come!
