London Heliport Noise Measurement Pilot

On the 24th March 2016 a pilot study was undertaken involving noise monitoring of London's only heliport. Riverside residents kindly assisted with the Easter weekend baseline measurements. The pilot will be extended to create a noise map of the local area to inform Wandsworth Council as to the issues involved in commercial helicopter movements.

EPSRC Sandpit meeting

On the 23rd March 2016, the University of Nottingham hosted an EPSRC Sandpit event. Dr Stephen Dance was an invited speaker, one of seven, to give his thoughts on Healthy Urban Living. Dr Sergio Altomonte was the organiser, part of the Department of Architecture and the Built Environment, lots of cross disciplinary ideas so could be the start of something big!

IOA Musical Group abstract submitted

Former Research Fellow Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina has submited an abstract to the upcoming Institute of Acoustics Musical Acoustics Group meeting to be held at London South Bank University on the 5th July 2016. The presentation is entitled, "Towards introducing basic acoustic education in the musical performance curriculum". We are looking forward to seeing the poster!

More abstracts submitted to Inter-Noise 2016

Two more abstracts have been submitted to Inter-Noise 2016 to be held in Hamburg, Germany. The first paper has been written by MSc student, Simon Brown and is entitled, "The suitability of additive manufacturing materials in a 1:10 scale reverberation chamber". The second paper is by Dr Stephen Dance, entitled, "Facing the Music: Helping Classical Musicians comply with the Control of Noise at Work Regulations". Should be a good conference!

University of the Arts Project

On the 9th March 2016 Olesya Asanova visited the London South Bank University laboratory. Olesya wanted to record and film the sound of clothes in the anechoic chamber. Her team included photpgrapher, models, sound engineer and makeup artistic to create a film for her final year project at the University of the Arts.

Peter Mapp gives guest lecture

On the 4th March 2015 Peter Mapp very kindly gave his 6th Masterclass to the Masters students. He presented his work on speech intelligibility following on from Lorenzo Morales guest lecture. He covered practical applications such as churches, halls, and stadia. Many thanks goes to Peter - we all hope to see him next year!

IOA Acoustic Bulletin Frontpage!

The March/April 2016 issue of the Institute of Acoustics Bulletin leads with Dr Stephen Dance's research with the Royal Academy of Music. His article is entitled, "A comparison of the hearing acuity of classical musicians". Let's see what people think!

Presentation to the 1st ListenUp Conference

The inaugural hearing conservation conference, ListenUp!, was held in Manchester and Buxton on 2/3rd March 2016. The conference and symposium was organised by the Health and Safety Laboratory, the research arm of the Health and Safety Executive. It was highly multi-disciplinary in nature with a lot of views discussed about how to improve the health and wellbeing of the population.  Dr Stephen Dance gave a presentation on "Facing the Music" on his work with orchestral musicians.
