Former Masters student Leo Weber, now with BDP, is to present his MSc thesis research results to the Institute of Acoustics half day meeting - Acoustic Design for Sustainable Buildings. His presentation is entitled, "Use of acoustic metamaterials for sound attenutation with airflow. We also wish him luck in his new job!

Visit from Fosters+Partners
On the 30th July Philip Robsinson and Jan Dierckx from Fosters+Partners visited the Acoustics Laboratory and the new Digital Architecture and Robots Lab at London South Bank University. Discussions were held on mutual collaboration opportunitiy combining these two areas of research to produce innovation in the field.

Measurements of the London Symphony Orchestra at the Proms
PhD Candidate Georgia Zepidou has been measuring the personal sound dose of the musicians of the London Symphony Orchestra as part of her research study. The orchestra were playing Prokofiev at the BBC Proms in the Albert Hall on 28th July with three pianists. A very difficult piece to perform!

Pioneering acoustic education initiative article
An
article by Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina has been accepted for publication in
the next issue Sept-Oct 2015 of the IOA Acoustics Bulletin.
The article summarises research carried out over the last 10 moths to
support an initiative to introduce basic acoustic education into the
performance music curriculum. The findings of the research are highly
compelling and promising. The initiative if accepted
and implemented could be the beginning of having musicians better
educated on the most important science behind their art. We hope you

Leo Presents at ICSV 2015, Florence
Ex-MSc student, Leo Weber, presented his thesis in the form of a paper at the International Conference on Sound and Vibration, 12-16th July 2015, Florence. The paper, co-authored by Dr Luis Gomez-AgustinA, was entitled, "Investigation into the application of an acoustic metamaterial for sound attenuation with airflow". It looks like he had a great time! It was agreed that London will be hosting ICSV 24 in 2017!

Presentations at the joint IOA Musical Acoustics and the Speech and Hearing Group
On the 9th July 2015 the Institute of Acoustics Musical Acoustics and Speech and Hearing Groups organised a one day meeting at Kingston University. The symposium was entitled, "Hearing impairment and the enjoyment and performance of music". Two papers were presented by the Acoustics Group. Dr Peter Mapp spoke on, "Assistive listening systems for music and speech for hearing impaired listeners". Followed by Dr Stephen Dance on, " A comparison of the hearing acuity of classical music students". The Musical Acoustics Group held their AGM and voted Jemma Jones and Stephen Dance on to the committee. The delegates all then had a long walk home, due to the tube strike!!
Dr Gomez Agustina Awarded a HEA Fellowship
Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina has been
awarded the nationally recognised teaching and learning qualification:
Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education teaching (PGCHE). This award qualifies the holder to become Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). Luis research project module was entitled, "Investigation into the potential introduction of basic acoustic education in the music performance curriculum".
The research project was commended by tutors and external examiners. Its findings and outputs are currently being disseminated and promoted
among HE music performance institutions and the Institute of Acoustics. Very well done Luis!

Prof Mak visits the Acoustics Group
On the 8th July 2015, on the invitation of Dr Stephen Dance, Prof Mak of Hong Kong Polytechnic University visited London South Bank University. He and his wife visited the Acoustics lab to discuss lighting and acoustics research and teaching options. Prof Mak was also interested in our Building Services courses in particular future possible options for collaboration.

Masters Thesis by Research Examined
Dr Stephen Dance is examining a Masters Thesis by Research from Salford University. William Fehlhaber has written his project on the subject of, "Does the type of diffuser matter?". Let's hope it is a good read.

Acoustics Group Summer Gathering
On the 3rd July 2015 the Acoustics Group held their annual summer gathering at EV Tas, Waterloo East. Invited were the people and companies that have helped the team this year, and pretty much every year! The sun shone and projects discussed including a micro powered amplifier system for the 3-D printed dodec, so the evening could be claimed on work expenses :)
