Music, Noise and Silence Exhibition Workshop

Dr Stephen Dance and Dr Gomez-Agustina were invited to participate in series of research workshops aiming at collecting insights and ideas for the 2018 exhibition on Music noise and silence being organised by the Science museum, Royal College of Music and University of Nottingham. The Acoustics Group offered attractive ideas and experiments which were well received. This engagement could see further collaborations with networks involved.

Acoustics at the Royal Academy of Music

On the last day of term the Masters' students assisted PhD student, Gizem Okten, with her room acoustic measurements at the Royal Academy of Music. Five rehearsal spaces were measured with winMLS/ARTA along with the Microflown Impedance Gun. In addition, the Jack Lyons Theatre was measured one last time, as the auditorium will pulled down on Monday 1st April and rebuilt for 2017/18.

Canadian Broadcasting Radio Interview

On the 25th March 2015 Lily Ames of CBC Radio visited the Acoustics Laboratory of London South Bank University. Lily wanted to create three radio packages to be broadcast in Canada over the summer. Dr Stephen Dance discussed the importance of your hearing, the work of the Acoustics Group and our work with the Royal Academy of Music in particular with the vocalists.

Peter Mapp's 5th Annual Masterclass

On the 21st March 2015 Peter Mapp very kindly gave his 5th Masterclass to the Masters students. He presented his work on speech intelligibility and it's application to the Masters' students. He covered PA systems for churches, theatres, Olympic venues, stadiums, including many interesting /  enlightening stories. Many thanks Peter - hope to see you next year

Acoustics students at Henry Wood Hall

The Acoustics Group visited Henry Wood Hall to undertake a new series of room acoustics measurements. This year our new subwoofer was taken to enable the students to understand the bass and boom in the hall, as well as our omni-directional dodec speaker. We think the students had a good time!

UAL students produce acoustic materials

As the first phase of a collaborative project to improve the acoustic conditions of an open plan work space at UAL Elephant and Castle, design students have recently submitted their sustainable acoustic material designs. LSBU Masters student Eric Bustamante, undertaking his final project on the acoustic improvement of the UAL space, and his  supervisor Dr Gomez-Agustina are the acoustic experts on the panel. They will assess the concepts and select the best all round designs after the Easter vacation.

STEM Seminar to 6th Formers on Acoustics


On the 5th March Dr Stephen Dance gave a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math seminar for the Training Partnership at UCL's new Institute of Education. The sixth formers enjoyed a talk on the relationship between mathematics and acoustics using the theme of music. A packed house listened intently to the demonstrates and engaged in the subject matter.

Abstract submitted to the British Otolaryngology Conference

On the 1st March 2015 an abstract for the British Academic Conference in Otolaryngology was submitted. The abstract was entitled, "An analysis of the noise exposure of passengers on the London Underground network". The work was a collaboration by L Ritche, S Dance, B Backus and C Tornari. The meeting will be held in Liverpool, 8-10th July 2015.
