On the 27th February 2014 MSc student Christina Higgins was awarded the Acoustical Society of America Newman Medal for best dissertation on architectural acoustics. Christina's thesis was entitled, "An investigation into the Helhholtz Resonators of the Queen Elisabeth Hall, London". Christina now works for Ramboll in London.

Students visit Henry Wood Hall
On the 20th February the Acoustics Group visited Henry Wood Hall. There was an opportunity to test the room acoustics of the space. Then we had the pleasure of hearing the London Philharmonic Orchestra rehearse the Berlioz overture!
IOA Presentation on Cochlear Implants
On the 19th February 2014, Dr Brad Backus gave an excellent presentation to the London Branch of the Institute of Acoustics on his research work for Neurelec. He answered many well formed questions in great depth, but ran out of time to explain in detail. The demonstrates and mathematical models were greatly appreciated.

ISVR Advanced Course 8-12th September 2014
On the 12th September 2014, Dr Stephen Dance will be teaching on the Advanced Course in Noise Control. The course is run by ISVR at Southampton University. This will be the 21st year Steve has lectured at ISVR - will there be a cake?

Abstract for Reproduced Sound 2014
On the 2nd February an abstract was submitted to the Institute of Acoustics Reproduced Sound Conference. The conference will be held on the days before the 40th Anniversary meeting on the 14-15th October 2014. The abstract is entitled, "Characterisation of the performance of a
sound field amplification system in simulated classrooms". It was written by Dr Stephen Dance, Dr Bradford Backus and Lorenzo Morales.
Abstract submitted for the Institute of Acoustics 40th Anniversary
On the 2nd February 2014 an abstract for the Institute of Acoustics 40th Anniversary. The National Exhibition Centre at Birmingham Airport will host the event on the 15-16th October 2014. The abstract is entitled, "Noise control potential of vacuum isolation panels" and it was written by Sheldon Walters and Dr Stephen Dance.
