Politecnico di Torino Architectural School to Visit

We have arranged, through the Erasmus staff mobility scheme, for  Prof Astolfi and Prof Carullo from Politecnico di Torino to visit the Acoustics Group. The visiting academics are from the School of Architecture and will be demonstrating their Voice-Care system developed  by the School of Electronic Engineering. The two day visit will be on 29-30th April. It will also allow Prof Astolfi to check up on her students!

ISVR at 50!

 
On the 11/12th July the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research will turn fifty. A symposium has been organised to celebrate the occasion. The Acoustics Group has a long standing relationship with Southampton University and so has organised an away day to celebrate the home of acoustics. So a dozen students, researchers and staff will be supporting this fantastic milestone!

New Earthworks Microphone

Due to the extended use of computer measurement systems another Earthworks M30BX omni-directional measurement microphone has been purchased. The microphone is self powered and of a very high quality. It works well with both winMLS and ARTA through the Digigram VX pocket. will certainly help Lorenzo with his research!

London South Bank University Reaccreditated

After a 17 year break, on the 26th March 2013 London South Bank University was reaccreditated by the Institute of Acoustics. In addition, the Certificate of Competence in Environmental Noise Measurement will run from early October. The  Diploma will commence in September 2013 with a highly experienced teaching team. Peter Mapp gives guest lecture

On the 22nd March 2013 Peter Mapp gave a as part of the Masterclass on acoustics. The MSc students enjoyed his presentation a repeat of his 133rd Audio Engineering Society tutorials on speech intelligibility, small room acoustics and sound systems. Lots of intelligent questions!

Visit to Henry Wood Hall

On the 21st March 2013, the first day of Spring, the Masters students visited Henry Wood Hall. The students measured the acoustics of the space where London's orchestras rehearse. Then intern Daniela Falzone gave an impromptu concert. It was beautiful, definitely a talented pianist.

Paper accepted for AES, Rome

One the 19th March 2013, PhD candidate Peter Mapp's paper was accepted for full review by the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society. Peter will be presenting the paper entitled, "Some practical aspects of STI measurement and prediction" at the 134th AES in Rome. Rome in the spring is beautiful.

Kvadrat - Philips Luminous Absorptive Panel

On the 14th March 2013 Kvadrat hosted an event to unveil a new product - the luminous panel based on Philips technology by Soft-cells.com. Dr Steve Dance presented an overview on architectural acoustics to the interior designers covering the basics of room acoustics. Philips demonstrated the Wifi enabled textile panels. The ambient effect was both beautifully and dynamic!

BBC News Item - Noise In London

On the 18th March 2013, the BBC broadcast a short new item on the sounds of the urban environment, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-21784548. Professor Shield and Steve Dance talked about how the soundscape has changed and common noise sources in a typical London street.

Paper submitted to ICSV 20

On the 15th March 2013 a joint paper between LSBU and Adande Refrigeration was submitted to ICSV congress on Sound and Vibration. The paper is entitled, "Noise reduction in commercial refrigerators - A practical approach" by Cat Marques, Luis Gomez, Steve Dance, Ed Hammond and Ian Wood. Cat is the lucky one going to Bangkok to present!

Dr Bob Peters wins IOA Stephens Medal


On the 15th March 2013 Visiting Research Fellow was awarded the Institute of Acoustics R W B Stephens medal. The medal was awarded for Bob's outstanding contribution to acoustics education over the past 40+ years. We are delighted for Bob and look forward to his lecture entitled, "Education, education, education", to be presented at the Institute of Acoustics Spring Conference to be held at Nottingham , 13-14 May 2013.

Luis Gomez wins Institute of Acoustics Award

On the 13th March 2013 it was announced by the Institute of Acoustics that Dr Luis Gomez had won the Peter Barnett Memorial Award. The Peter Barnett award recognises advancements and technical excellence in the fields of electro-acoustics, speech intelligibility and education in acoustics. It is awarded on merit and only when it is well deserved and was awarded for his contribution to science for this doctoral thesis, "Design and optimisation of voice alarm systems for underground stations". Luis will be presented the award at Reproduced Sound 2013, were he will give a presentation on his doctoral research. Well done!!

Acoustics team win Enterprise Award

On the 7th March 2013 the Acoustics Group where awarded the London South Bank University Vice Chancellor's Enterprise award for most innovative team project. The team members were Ben Dymock, Richard White, Lorenzo Morales, and Stephen Dance. The prize will be used to fund an away day to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research in July 2013.

Interns from Politecnico di Torino

On the 4th March 2013 two Masters students from the Politecnico di Torino came to study with the Acoustics Group. Daniela Falzone will be working with the Royal Academy of Music project specialising in vocal stress. Elena Vercellone is working on the schools project again on vocal stress. Let's hope they enjoy the next 3 months!

Buy Quiet Workshop

On the 5th March 2013 post-doctorate research fellows Dr Luis Gomez and Dr Catrina Marques attended the Institute of Acoustics Buy Quiet workshop hosted by Nottingham University. I think it must of been good as they kept talking about it!

Adande's quiet refrigerator tested

On the 4th March 2013 Adande bought their new draw loading refrigerator to the acoustics lab. The refrigerator has noise and vibration reducing technology, the effectiveness of which was tested in the anechoic chamber. The results will be reported at www.icsv2013.org. The researchers are looking forward to Thailand.
