Bridget wins R W B Stephens Award

For 2011, Professor Shield has been awarded the Institute of Acoustics R W B Stephens Medal. This award was named after the first President of the Institute and is for outstanding contribution to acoustics research or education. Well done Bridget!

Georgia wins IOA Young Persons' Awards for Innovation

For 2011, Georgia Zepidou has been awarded the Institute of Acoustics Young Persons' Award for Innovation in Acoustical Engineering. The award is given in conjunction with IAC Ltd and is in recognition for excellence in acoustical engineering. The award includes a luxury weekend break in Milan, a cheque for £500, and a silver cup. Georgia is now writing up her research with the Royal Academy of Music and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Enjoy Italy!

Students measure the acoustics of Henry Wood Hall

On Tuesday 22nd February the Architectural Acoustics students measured Henry Wood Hall. They used the winMLS system with a dodec sound source, then made a recording using an anechoic signal processed through a Zoom recorder.

Rob passes his Phd viva!

On 21st February 2011 Acoustic Group Research Fellow Rob Conetta passed his Phd viva! Rob studied at the University of Surrey at the Centre of Communication Systems Research. Well done Dr Rob!

RBA Acoustics / ANC Seminar

On 15th February 2011 Russell Richardson of RBA Acoustics gave a seminar to the Masters students in Environmental and Architectural Acoustics. Russell gave an overview of life of the consultants and a briefing on the workings of the Assocationof Noise Consultants. As ever we ended up in the Duke!

Bob Peters made a Visiting Research Fellow

Effective from 3rd May 2011, Dr Bob Peters will become the Acoustics Group's first visiting research fellow. Bob has been teaching the students on the Masters course in Environmental and Architectural Acoustics for the past 15 years. Long may it continue!

Prototype acoustic screen tested

On the 10th February 2011 the Acoustics Group tested a prototype acoustic barrier to be used at the Royal Academy of Music. The insertion loss tests were undertaken in LSBU's anechoic chamber, we were fortunatel to have Sarah Large, an MSc student, give a Piccolo performance. Most enjoyable!

Anne Kyyro Quinn Tulip Collection

On the 10th February 2011 an acoustic project to demonstrate the effective absorption of the Tulip range of materials was undertaken by Anne Kyyro Quinn, as part of her Masters course. Reverberation time measurements were taken by Anne in the laboratory of London South Bank University. A beautiful piece of work Anne!

A one day conference organised by Environmental Protection UK will be held at the Hallam Centre, London on 1st March 2011. Prof Shield of the Acoustics Group will give her take on noise within and around schools.
