New Equiment for Hospital Acoustics


The Acoustics Group have purchased a 3rd Norsonic Nor140 sound level meter from Campbell Associates. This analyser will be used by Nicky Shiers to improve the acoustics in hospitals, in association with Arup through an EPSRC Case Award.

Acoustics at Glyndebourne


On Sunday 24th May Georgia Zepidou was personally invited by conductor, Vladimir Jurowski, to Glyndebourne Opera House to "see Falstaff". The orchestra pit design suggestions as implemented in-house were seen. The musicians were very kind and an excellent day was had by all.

Nheolis offer Acoustics Group 3 urbines


On 12th May 2009, Nheolis offered LSBU 3 3.5 kW rooftop wind turbines for an acoustic and energy study. Together with Capita Symonds these urbines will be installed on a new development in early 2010. The joint industry-academic project to monitor the turbine performance was funded through a KTP partnership. Well done all.

Dance and Sons test Henry Wood Hall Solution


On 14th May 2009 Dance and Sons tested a novel solution to the boomy Henry Wood Hall. Christos Nestoras, a PhD student from the Acoustics Group, clearly measured an improvement in the natural acoustic of the hall with the solution in place. Full installation will commence on 21st July 2009.

IMechE/CIBSE London Branch on Urbines


Dr Stephen Dance and Prof Tony Day gave a joint presentation to the IMechE/CIBSE London branch on 13th May 2009. The topic chosen was Urban Wind Turbines and it was standing room only. The results were presented for energy, noise, wind, vibration outputs for two types of urbines. I didn't eat all those sandwiches!

Nheolis Turbines Visit the Acoustics Group




On 12th May 2009, Sophie Cohendet from Nheolis Wind Turbines visited the Acoustics Group. Discussions were held on the future installation and monitoring of multiple urban wind turbines, urbines, in central London.

New KTP Associate Starts with Capita


Linda Liviani started her KTP/PhD project in collaboration with Capita Symonds on urbines on 11th May 2009. The 3 year scheme will investigate the benefits and issues raised by roof top wind turbines. Good luck.

Accreditation for MSc in Acoustics

On 7th May 2009 CIBSE accredited the MSc in Environmental and Architectural Acoustics for another 5 years, the 2009-2013 in take; thus partially fulfilling the criteria for CEng status. The accreditation panel were very complementary, particularly on the number of field trips taken by the students and the standard of examinations. Later, at the Royal Society Prof Hopkins (our ex-Vice Chancellor) was made an Honoury Fellow of CIBSE.
