Knowledge Connect Case Study- LPO
On 27th January 2009, Dr Stephen Dance and Georgia Zepidou were invited to give a guest presentation on the Knowledge Connect scheme. A very well attended meeting of Culture and Arts companies listened to a case study concerning the Acoustics Group work with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The event was held at the CASS Business School of City University. Wine and nibbles were enjoyed while discussing the scheme and the current economic climate.
Article in Acoustics Bulletin
In the Jan/Feb 2009 issue of the Institute of Acoustics magazine, Acoustics Bulletin, an article by based on an Master dissertation has been published. The article concerns iPod listening levels to speech and music on the underground and was written by Phil Wash of Bickerdike Allen Partners and Stephen Dance. All good PR. Well done Phil.
EPSRC Event Day
IoA Speech and Hearing Group
On 23rd January 2009, the Acoustics Group Dr Greenland chaired the 2nd AGM of the Speech and Hearing Group. The meeting was held at WSP Consulting Engineers and was prefaced by a presentation by Prof David Howard. David gave an excellent and engaging talk on voice synthesis based on the work at the Audio Laboratory, part of York University. The well attended meeting broke up promptly, and headed to the Duke of York. Thanks to you all.

Remote Monitoring on Ashenden House
On Monday 19th January 2009, TGA Consulting Engineering spec'd out complete remote sensing for the wind turbines on Ashenden House. This will allow the Sustainable Energy students at the new CEREB building to keep up to date with developments on site without getting wet! This will also help PhD student Sally Williams get complete remote logging information for her wind turbulence simulation.

Acoustics Group seek New Researcher
Prof Shield is looking for a researcher in the field of acoustics. Its a three year position suitable for a postgraduate to work on an EPSRC funded project ‘Identifying a Sound Environment for Secondary Schools', a joint project between London South Bank University, London University Institute of Education and the University of Salford. Telent sponser studentship
Telent plc are offering an on-going studentship for a Masters student on the Acoustics course. The studentship will cover half the European course fees. There is an opportunity to undertake a internship with the company over the summer. The scheme will run for 2009,10 and 2011.
LSBU leads Great Britain in KTP projects
London South Bank University now has more Knowledge Transfer Partnerships than any other British University, thanks to the work of the KTP office. The Department of Engineering System has just employed a Business Development Office, Yuan Xing, to further push enterprise, consultancy, business and research. Well done everyone!

Schultz Grant for Education Completed
Dr Stephen Dance was awarded the Schultz Grant for Architectural Acoustics Education in May 2007. In December 2008 the new Acoustics Group website was unveiled. The new site includes all the activities undertaken by the group, such as education, research, consultancy and enterprise work. Students are provided for by way of profiles, conferences and access to past Masters dissertations. Finally, computer models are freely available for use by the acoustics community, these include reverberation time, speech intelligibility, sound level distribution and absorption coefficients.
